Canon ip4200 low ink level warning

I'm pretty pleased with my Canon ip4200, apart from the price of
consumables. I just got my first "ink is running low" message, for the
cyan cartridge, and I have purchased a replacement. I want to get all
the usable ink out of the cartridge, if that won't do ant harm to the
print head. My question is, will I get another "ink has now run out"
message coupled with a refusal to print, or should I now replace that
cartridge?

After you get a low ink warning you can still print until you get an out
of ink message. Then you can still print maybe one or two photos to be
safe. You do not want to risk your print head and for God sake do not
use any generic ink that will ruin your printer, invalidate your
warranty, produce results that are not as good and will fade faster.

On my ip5200 I haven't seen a second warning, just distorted colors.
That is when I replace the cartridge and haven't experienced any harm.
There is still some ink in the sponge.

Just make sure it never runs dry.

For what its worth, my MP500 (a close cousin of the IP4200 I've read) does
indeed give you a second warning. In fact, it flat out stops printing and says
the cart is empty.

The warning is the first and only one, the next event will be a refusal to
print (to protect the printhead). Meanwhile you may get some poor quality
prints before the refusal is invoked.

Run it until you squeeZe every last drop of ink out of the cart and then
run it some more.

I received a second warning after the "ink is running low" message that
stated that the ink had run out.

Run em dry and it's a good chance the print head will be blocked, you
should have a look when the low ink message shows, by then there will
be a tiny amount in the tank, enough for perhaps two more colour page
prints.

IE enough ink for a DVD cover, then either replace the tank or replace
the print head, as heads are worth more than the printer, you decide.

It's nearly identical in price between a new printer and another set
of genuine tanks.

I was running low with one printer and picked up a multifunction
MP-150 for a lousy $75, new cartridges were $89, when it runs out of
ink just toss the lot and grab whatever is on special.
