Canon i860 Ink Refill Recommendation

L

Lucas Tam

Hi all,

I just picked up a i860 for ~99USD. Can anyone recommend a good place to
purchase refill inks for their printer (BCI-6CMYK)? I did a
groups.google.com search but the results were inconclusive.

I'm also located in Canada, so a Canadian supplier or an American company
that ships to Canada would be good.

Atlantic Inkjet seems to ship to Canada - are they any good?

Thanks.

Just a bit of advise here - the Print Heads on these canon printers are very sensitive &
will blow the very fine heater elements if the ink is not upto standard - you may get a
warning that there is no ink cartridge inserted too before. You may get away with it for a
while but take into account that you will be shortening the life of the print head if the
ink isn`t good.

I use Atlantic Inkjet and have had excellent results refilling the ink
tanks in a Canon i850. The colour is virtually identical, and the ink is
waterproof on good photo paper like Office Depot.

It seems Atlantic Inkjet uses Formulabs ink, which is excellent stuff
and matches Canon ink extremely well, if not perfectly.

Atlantic ink seems to have great prices and reasonable shipping as well.
Thank you for the information!

I have a Canon i450D and I've been using the Canon compatibles from
http://www.inksell.com. They print photos as well as the Canon inks.

Good luck.

I have another question about ink for Canon i860. Inasmuch as there
are separate ink tanks for separate colors, can one tank from a mfg.
different from canon be
filled while the other ink tanks are still holding Canon ink? Would
this cause problems? best, Aaron

That's a good question... I think as long as the inks are formulated
properly, there shouldn't be a problem - especially considering when you're
refilling, you're mixing left over Canon ink with non-canon ink.

Ah but that is an excellent question itself. It's one thing to mix inks on
the page; either they work together or they don't. But to refill
aftermarket ink into the OEM tank? Is that ok? Isn't it better to start
with either a blank tank or one sold by the aftermarket ink supplier and
then just refill that with the same ink?

BTW, i860 ink is the same as i960, no?

Good quality ink will probably mix just fine. Cheap ink may not mix well
and should be avoided for its poor quality anyway.

For what it's worth, I've refilled Canon BCI-3e(CYM/BK) tanks with
Atlantic Inkjet (Canada ) refill inks and experienced no problems at
all. For all intents and purposes, the Atlantic Inkjet stuff is the
same.

Ideally that would be best. But getting blanks may not be cost effective
unless you can order ink or some other products at the same time to get
reasonable shipping costs.

Here in Canada I have been unable to find an inexpensive supply of blank
ink tanks.

The CYM colours and the photo black are the same, while the pigmented
black is the BCI-3eBK tank.

Of course the i960 has the light photo CM tanks too.

I've NOT had a problem with "mixing ink" in any of my printers
(HP/CANON/EPSON) BUT, my ink supplier is a good one that guarantees the
compatability of thier ink (www.inksupply.com).

I dont know if they sell to Canadians, but if they do you could try
www.inksupply.com.

Thier Canon empty tanks come complete with little rubber stoppers for
the fill hole and nice little snap-on caps for the ink hole.

I am using an ink refill kit from IMS http://www.ims-ink.com. They give you
enough ink for many, many refills and the cost at the Burlington, Ontario
Costco store is $23.59.

Have been using it for about a year now and no problem.

I won't order empty tanks from the US...it's just not worth it.

The cost after shipping, customs fees and exchange is too high. After
factoring in the cost of ink, their empty tanks are almost as expensive
as buying original Canon tanks up here.

It would only be practical if I needed to order empty tanks in high
quantities.
Too bad they don't carry the BCI-6 series of cartridges yet. : (

They don't list the i850/i550/i860 printers either, although they list
BCI-3 tanks. If I'm not mistaken, the BCI-3 and 6 tanks are the same.
Canon simply uses 3 and 6 dye-based ink combinations in them and label
them as such.

I've been using inksupply.com/missupply.com (same site) for a few
years now with incredible results. I use the same ink in a Canon
i320/bjc60000 & s820. And I recently tried it on an HP1115 & HP812c
with the same spectaular results.

I don't think Inksupply.com carries i860 ink kits yet, but they do have
bulk bottles of ink (you'll need to supply your own filling equipment like
syringes, plugs, drill, etc).

Look for it by CARTRIDGE NUMBER...

MIS isnt always up to date with current model numbers.. They update
if a new model uses a NEW cartridge.

Im pretty sure the i860 uses the same carts as the last 3 generations
of Canon printers, so it uses the same ink.

I found the ink for my i950 by looking up the S820 which uses the
same cartridge numbers.

Im pretty sure the i860 uses them also.

Look up the S820, and go as if you were going to order cartridges.
Write down the CANON cartridge number, then check and see what
cartridges the i860 uses.

If they are the same, then just order whatever colors you need only
order them for the S820, if it uses the same carts, it uses the same
ink.

I just looked it up.

Any printer that uses the BCI-6 cartridges uses the same one as your
printer.

Try to find it that way (or e-mail them) they always answer
questions. They might not answer TODAY but they will answer.
