Cannot wake up from sleep/suspend/standby

Dude, I got a Dell D600 Latitude laptop (which I upgraded from XP Home SP1
to SP2; only installed Acrobat/MS Office/Cygwin/Vim) that has problems
going to sleep/suspend/standby/whatever it's called. Occasionally, either
when I close the case or hit Fn-Esc (the suspend key), it refuses to go to
sleep. The power indicators (which normally turn off) are on, and the
laptop continues to feel warm. But I can do nothing to bring it out of this
state short of holding down the power button for it to turn off. The disk
indicator is never busy, and there's no signs that the computer is actually
responsive (i.e., when I hit Win+E the hard disk light doesn't blink, or
when I play a sound, nothing happens...yes I can play stuff in mplayer2
just from the keyboard). Is the system freezing after the screen turns off?
What's going on? As usual I have Googled but didn't find anything. Thanks
in advance for any help. If you need further info let me know.

This problem can often happen with poorly written drivers or drivers
that do not fully support standby. You need to check your BIOS
settings, try updating your chipset (motherboard) drivers, and see if
any of that helps.

The computer is locking up either when going into the sleep state or
coming out of it. It isn't going to be that one of your hardware
devices don't support the sleep state because I have a very similar
laptop (D800) and it has no problems with Standby. You can check Dell's
website for updating the BIOS and drivers :)
