Cannot view App Event Log

Bit of a wierd one, don't know if anybody else has run
into this?

On several of our production servers (Win2K3) we recently
found that we could not view the Application Event Log.
When it is clicked it says there are entries but none are
displayed even after refreshing. We have restarted the
event Log service and even rebooted the boxes to no avail.
I have tried to export the log to csv but the resultant
file cannot be opened. I have tried to export the log
(AppEvent.evt) to another machine but cannot open it. I
would try clearing the log but there are events recently
that we want to check. Any ideas??

The temporary fix;
You might try changing the file properties to "Overwrite as needed"

Then; Control Panel|Administrative Tools|Services|Event Log Service|General,
set the "Startup Type:" to "Disabled" restart the pc, then delete (or move)
the corrupt *.evt file(s) from %windir%\system32\config then set the Event
Log Service "Startup Type:" back to "Automatic", restart for effect.

The more permanent fix;
