Cannot use fax-modem : port in use ?!?

Hi,

trying to configure a fax program, I cannot configure the modem because usde
by other app.
No other app I am aware of is in function
In config panel->hardware I see my modem, but cannot run diagnostic applet :
modem is in use !

How can I see who uses it ? If I try to change COM port I get same message
that it could harm "the other program" that uses it !!!

Can I check "who" "owns" that port ???

TIA !!

Likely your motherboard's one or two dedicated Serial or COM
ports are enabled. Basically, you can have two Physical ports 1/2.
Then there are additional multiplexed ports 3/4 that use alternate
addressing but share IRQ (Interrupt Request) lines win COM 1/2.
Modems have their own COM port built-in. Usually, they (Modem)
will configure to use COM 3 to avoid conflicts.
Best thing to do is enter BIOS setup and locate the Peripheral
control category and disable one or both Serial ports. Then boot
into XP and remove your modem and then allow XP to re-detect it.
Once the on-board Serial ports are disabled it can then use any
COM port 1-4 without conflicts.
