cannot use cd-rw after upgrading from WINME to XPPRO SP1

I have a compaq presario 7479 that was running WINME and I just upgraded it
to WIN XPPRO SP1. My cd-rw isn't recognized anymore and shows it to be a
cd-rom only. The cd-rw is a phillips cdd4401/71 and was preinstalled. It
shows the driver as the XP driver. Do I upgrade firmware or is there a better
driver to use? What about registry settings? I presume it is compatible with
XP. Help!

Go to the Phillips web site and download a new driver, if any. If not,
you'll probably need to buy a new drive.

I have tried article 316529 and all that happens is my drive shows as being
recordable but when I use Windows Media Player 10 it indicates no burner
present. I have also received from HP support a firmware upgrade. No option
yet has worked. Is there anything else that you may think of?
Thanks for your help.

Hi Chris,

No, no other ideas. You might try one of the multimedia or hardware groups
for further assistance.

A couple of things to check. In Control Panel - Admin tools - Services,
make sure the IMAPI CD Burning service is Started; then in My Computer,
r-click on the drive, Properties, Recording page and make sure that
recording is enabled. This is the inbuilt CD burning - which is what
WMP uses; it does not work through third party packages. Note that if
you have installed a third party 'drag drop packet writing' package like
Direct CD or In CD it is likely to have turned this inbuilt burning off;
its pseudo drag and drop methods do *not* agree with them.

If it still does not work or that Recording option is not even present,
then it is likely that this is one of the drives which 'for whatever
reason' to quote an old .ini file do not work with this method. You
will have to use one of the packages like Nero/EasyCD/Record Now and
burn audio CD with them
