CD-ROM driver? Using XP

I have an old Compaq Deskpro SFF, and I recently upgraded it to XP. I'm
having trouble now with my CD-ROM drive, I seem to lack the driver for
it. I'm not sure whether I did something that deleted/uninstalled the
driver when I cleaned up some other unnecessary software, or whether
this older PC just isn't 100% compatible with XP.

Anyhow, any thoughts about how I can download a driver that will
re-enable the (factory-installed) CD-ROM drive in this box? I'm a bit
dead in the water when it comes to installing additional software on
this box!

Or -- is there a CD-RW drive (USB attached) I could buy that wouldn't
require a working CD-ROM drive?

How is it not working? Not seen or do you get an error message?

In Control Panel/System/Device Manager, the drive has the yellow (!).
It's Compaq CD-224E. Error is "Windows cannot load the device driver
for this hardare. The driver may be corrupted or missing (Code 39)"
Tried Uninstalling, then reinstalling. It identifies the hardware
correctly (as CD-224E) but says it doesn't have the driver.

I'm not entirely sure XP supports this CD drive, but I think it was
still working after I upgraded this box to XP. I think I deleted a
program (using Add/Remove Programs) that I shouldn't have... I'd had
an external CDRW thing with Roxio, maybe that was it? Anyhow, I don't
have the driver at this point, and can't seem to find a working driver
for CD-224E for XP online, that I can download.

Did you install drivers for your motherboard? If you did and you still
can't get the drive to work, just replace it.

addy, and I'll ship you a known XP-compatible internal cd-rom, if you will
then just send me back, or PayPal me back the postage--it'll be an internal
mount that replaces yours bolt-for-bolt and jumper-for-jumper. BTW, a
USB-mount CD-RW (or an internal-mount, for that matter) does not need a
working CD-Rom in order to function correctly. s

Thanks, all, for the suggestions. I still have the problem.

I tried driverguide, downloaded and installed whatever looked
promising, but no change.
Then, I went out and bought a Mad Dog USB CD/R/W player. I plugged that
in, my PC recognized the hardware, even popped up a little alert to
tell me if I could just plug it into a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port I'd get
better performance (don't have one of those, on this old box, though).

But Device Manager still can't load a driver. I get exactly the same
error message as I reported above on the Compaq internal CD 224e - the
Code 39 and "missing or corrupted" device driver.

My PC is looking in the following directories for drivers for both
drives:
C:\WINNT\system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
C:\WINNT\System32\Drivers\DLACDBHM.sys
C:\WINNT\System32\Drivers\DRVMCDB.sys
C:\WINNT\system32\DRIVERS\imapi.sys
C:\WINNT\system32\Drivers\PxHelp20.sys
C:\WINNT\system32\DRIVERS\redbook.sys
C:\WINNT\system32\storprop.dll

(Capitalization and all...) There are little boxes with a green
checkmark next to derom.sys, imapi.sys, redbook.sys, and storprop.dll
(I think the other stuff might have come from the driverguide stuff I
installed?)

And the device instance ID's are, for the Compaq 224E:
IDE\CDROMCOMPAQ_CD-224E__________________________9.0B____\5&344D85D1&0&0.0.0

For the Mad Dog:
USBSTOR\CDROM&VEN_TSSTCORP&PROD_CD/DVDW_SH-S182D&REV_SB00\DEF10A61B6C1&0

I also tried installing the Mad Dog software CD (over the LAN from my
laptop's CD drive), no change.

The fact that both drives (of entirely different vintages) are doing
the same thing says there is something more generally wrong... but I
don't understand what the layers are so am hoping one of you will be
able to explain this!

PS: I just realized it HAS to be that I deleted something I need, it's
not an XP incompatibility problem! The whole reason I put XP on this
box was so I could run a review copy of Office 2007 beta from the CD
Microsoft gave me, so I definitely had a working CD drive after
installing XP, as I had no trouble at all installing O2007! I
uninstalled some stuff like Roxio that I had thought came with an old
CDRW burner I no longer use. And maybe something from Phillips? If only
I could reverse that.... I think that's the source of my woes. But I
don't have a way to do that.

Hoping this additional info triggers some "aha's" from someone out
there!
