Cannot upgrade to XP from 98SE

I keep getting messages that Windows XP setup does not
support upgrading from Windows 98. Everything I find on
the Microsoft site says that 98 and 98SE is upgradable.
My system requirements are all fine. Any ideas? I don't
want to lose all my files by doing a full install!

That is a typical message if Windows XP is OEM.
OEM is designed only to install on a new computer and is not capable
of upgrade.

You can either perform a Clean Installation or purchase a retail
upgrade.

It is an upgradeable version. What is the exact error you are getting?

Your computer must be a good candidate for an upgrade first. That means
it should be a P-III or better, with 256 MB of RAM or more, and a hard disk
of at least 10 GB with between 2 GB and 4 GB free.
As well, you must be using the Upgrade version of Windows XP. The OEM
version (often misleadingly sold as a "full" version -- there is no such
thing) will not support an upgrade operation. The version you need is the
Upgrade Version of Windows XP.
