Cannot update Windows with free version???

Tony

Has anyone received the following errors when trying to
simply update Windows XP Professional with ANY of the
Patches (Patches for the OS, Outlook, IE... anything!):

<Filename> Setup cannot update a checked (debug) system
with a free (retail) version of the <Filename>, or vice versa.
ie:
KB823980 Setup cannot update a checked (debug) system with
a free (retail) version of the KB823980, or vice versa.

The PC was just upgraded from Windows XP-Home to Windows
XP-Professional and IE will not work. We get this error
when trying to update ANY of the OS or IE Patches from
Microsoft. Even 'Windows Update' fails (The files are
downloaded but NOT installed).
Note: The Windows-XP Professional version is NEW, and is
from the latest Technet CD, is licensed via the web (has
Build 2600.xpsp1.020828-1920 with Service Pack-1).

Thanks,
Tony

Um, this means that you installed the debugging version of Windows XP
instead of the retail version. (Or at least something on the system is
making Setup think that you are running the debugging version - maybe you're
running a beta version of something or other.) The debugging version is for
debugging, not for general use. Patches are available only for retail
versions.

Thanks, you were right!!
I checked the Microsoft Technet guy at the office and he
says that he did not know this!!! He gave me the wrong CD
on more detailed checking. New install, all is ok.

FREAK - It cost me 35 Hours of trouble and a failed
upgrade from XP Home that lost my 'My Documents' foulder
and travel photos. It also cost me $200 for a new ADSL
Modem as it was no longer working in this XP version!.

It would be great if it stated this in the install (That
it is a Debug version and not the full version!) but I
guess that would also bee too hard for Microsoft to
program?
