Cannot update windows through internet explorer

Tried going to microsoft's website to update my windows
component but the scanning won't proceed:

"Windows Update is looking for available updates... 0%
complete"

Tried following the instructions in the troubleshooting
section but still the scanning won't proceed. Any
remedies for this? I'm running IE6 on XP pro.

How long do you stay connected when MS is looking for the information?
It could take awhile, not hours.

Make sure that your Firewall, Security software are not active.

I left the connection on for a few hours while I went out
to run some errands. When I came back the thing was still
at 0%.
