cannot update IP from DHCP on fresh install

Hello everyone,

Somehow after I've install W2K pro on a PC, I don;t have access to Internet,
when I'm checking the IP adress assigned is empty, but I can ping 127.0.0.1
so the NIC is ok. If I've try to renew my IP get the message that can't reach
the DHCP server.
If I've type manually everything, IP, mask, gateway, DNS, doesn't save the
IP for DNS and gateway so still cannot connet to Internet.
the two computer I have are in a small workgroup connected directly to a
Cable modem, so I get the IP for mthere.

Any Idea or waht I'm missing ?

thanks in advance.

Some cable modems require you to run an installation process
before you can access the modem. I suggest you try this:
1. Run the installation program.
2. Start a Command Prompt
3. Type this command: ipconfig /all
4. Make a note of the Default Gateway address.
5. Try to ping this address.

Pinging 127.0.0.1 (=localhost) does not prove anything,
since the test packets never leave your PC.

I think before you can get your machine can connect to Internet, you have to
first make the 2 machines can communicate together since they are connected
to the same segment. Even DHCP IP cannot be acquired, Win2K/98SE and up can
automatically generate an IP address started with 169.254.*.*, which is call
APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing), which can make all the clients
without IP address properly acquired can communicate together. So, you can
use IPCONFIG for check the IP address of the 2 machines and confirm what IP
address is automatically generated, and try pinging their peer
correspondingly. If this test pass, you can think about what's going on
with your router, else, you have to think about your connectivity before
continuing.

Thanks for your response.
The modem that I use doesn't need a software to be able to communicate, but
aparently the problem is communication, becasue whe nI try to ping the
Gateway said "Host unreachable" and the same message for whatever IP i've
tested.

The driver for the NIC is ok, the light on the NIC is ON and detect that
I've pluged the network cable on the computer.

Also I've deactivate IPIPA service from the registry.

Any other comment will be appreciated.
