Cannot start Internet Explorer 6 anymore

Hi everyone,

My neighbour just brought me his computer because he's having a bit of
trouble with it. It seems he can no longer start his Internet Explorer
browser.

After getting rid of a lot of spyware, checking for virii, etcetera... (the
usual stuff to check) I still was not able to get the browser going again.

When I boot the machine (Windows XP, IE6), I get a message asking me which
script debugger I would like to use (which is another thing that's not quite
right), and I get a message about an error in wjview.exe .

Starting the IE6 browser gives me an error message, almost immediately,
telling me that IE has encountered an error and needs to be closed. Checking
for details, I find a mention of urlmon.dll .

A quick Google told me to re-register the urlmon.dll , which I did to no
avail.

Can anybody help me out here? I'm at a loss here as to what to try next.

Thanks in advance,

Princess Morgiah

We have a similar problem on my partner's computer. He
moved it here and we tried to install earthlink as his
ISP. We can get onto the internet but we can not access it
with IE. It keeps saying error on the page. We were able
to install AOL, but the same error came up. So if you find
any answers please share! Thanks

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/IE/scriptdb.htm

Go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced.
Check the box to Disable script debugging.
Uncheck the box to Display a notification about every script error.

You might want to refresh your scripting engine:

Bit of a problem here - since I cannot start Internet Explorer, it's
impossible to access the tools/internet options/advanced tab - it's not a
script error problem on a page I'm hitting.

As I said before in another reply, I'm not faced with a script problem, I
cannot start Internet Explorer at all.

I'd be happy to trade my problem for a script problem, though - would you
mind swapping machines :)

I have had the same problem I found a trojan slmss.exe and it took for ever to get it removed. It was not allowing me to get into IE6 at all. I finnally got rid of it and was able to connected a few times to IE6 and now nothing. I can get onto the internet through Netscape(UGH), but not IE6. Can you offer any help?

I get a message about an error in wjview.exe

That means that something is trying to use or check on the status of
the computer's Java support. It could be traces of malware.
Have you used the tomcoyote HijackThis! tool yet?

If you have MS Java you should have a windows app called wjview
and a command line app called jview.

Try to Run... wjview or open a command window and enter jview
What do you see?

A quick Google told me to re-register the urlmon.dll

I wish we could tell XP users to do an IE Repair but it only exists
for them if they installed IE6sp1 before installing XPsp1.

Here is the closest subset of the IE Repair procedure that I can see.

FWIW this is a list of commands created by extracting from fixie.inf
what an IE Repair would do for Windows 2000 users:

regsvr32 /i browseui.dll
regsvr32 /i shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll
regsvr32 mshtmled.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll

What that represents is the set of re-registrations which
FixIE.inf indicates would be done for Base.W2K.AddReg

N.B. that neither mshtmled.dll nor actxprxy.dll have an entry point
called DllInstall and hence the /i option can not be used for them.

Neither msjava.dll nor shell32.dll are referred to by FixIE.inf
but those are two other modules which are often suggested to XP users
as needing re-registration for repairing in various circumstances.

Note that such re-registrations are normally done by an IE Repair
during a boot while nothing is running so at the very least I think
that it would be best to ensure that iexplore.exe is not active in your
task list. (Close all visible IE windows and then check that the
iexplore.exe is not in the list of Processes in Task Manager.
Ctrl-Shift-Esc,Ctrl-Tab,i,i,...)

Good luck

Go to Tools | Internet Options | Advanced.
You can do the same thing using the Internet Options Control Panel
applet. Alternatively just Run... (e.g. press Win-R and enter:)
control inetcpl.cpl

In fact, since you are using OE you could also do it from there
using its Tools, Options, Connection tab and Internet Connections...
button. (Alt-T,O,Ctrl-Backtab x2,C) ;o
