You were quite right, Gary. I had entered te server name with an @ and not a
stop.
But, on trying to correct the entries, I find that the "servers" tab no
longer appears in account properties. There had been a modem problem which
had stopped giving dialling sounds and "status" display. Using HP Recovery
Manager, I reinstalled the modem software and drivers. The sound came back
and the "status" access.
HP modem check now reports following error message:

Could not find file 'C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Modem
Check\translations\12297.xml
The modem description: HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP
Provider: CXT
More ideas please.

You may have to ask HP for a replacement. Try:

Thanks Robert. Since my last post, my internet connection is working faster
than usual, but all "connections" are reported as disconnected, but, out of
the blue, one wrongly named WinMail account, showes the "server" tab and I
was able to correct the addresses. Meanwhile, I have reported all the
problems to HP.

You're welcome.

All now OK. Discoveref that Vista had been tring to auto-update the internal
modem files (drivers?), but this had failed. After hours trying to find and
get help, Vista discovered its error and corrected it. Then after deleting
ALL accounts in WinMail, re-starting and creating an account with the correct
server addresses, WinMail effortlessly connected and sent and received email.
The auto-update by Vista and its problems were all in the background and
left me in the dark. Vista should at least report its error. I discovered
it only when I looked at updates and spotted one that had failed and, behold,
that it was specifically an update for the modem software.
Thanks for your help, Robert .
