There is currently a problem with BT Smtp servers and Windows mail. It's
been
there since yesterday (24/07/07) morning and as far as I know is not yet
fixed.

To be strictly accurate, BT report the problem concerns web mail
and email clients, ie. not just Windows Mail.

BT admitted a problem last night.
Harass them.
Julian, i'm retired so i've got all day to make someones life at BT a
bl***y misery, whats the best way to harass them?

Hi everyone

I have been ripping my hair out over the same problem and have done
everything recommended including full system retore, removing all anti virus
software etc. When I spoke to BT yesterday they omited to tell me that this
was their problem and that they had known about it for two days. I only
found this out this morning after calling again following comments on this
site about BT. They have basically told me to sit tight and that they should
have the problem fixed shortly. So in a nutshell, don't do what I was going
to do which is a full system reload.

Let's just hope their (BT's) "shortly" is sooner rather than later. The last
time I had a problem sending Emails using BT - back in January, it was 6
weeks before they got it fixed. Their "Service Status" site shows there being
a problem with mail since 23/07/07 - 11:42a.m. - but it is flagged as having
been fixed as of 10:25p.m. yesterday. But as far as I know it is still a
problem for those of us using Windows Mail.

I have exactly the same problem - it strated happening last night - and yes I
am on BT.

What is odd, though, is that I have 2 PCs, sitting on the same LAN inside my
router. The one running Outlook 2003 on Vista cannot make a connection to
the SMTP server, but the one running Outlook 2003 on XP connects fine. So
it's definitely Vista related.

I also have two machines and the one running XP is fine. Can I suggest that
as soon as someone has their BT server back again they post a message as BT
seem to think we are all psychic!

Hi, had same problem, just been in contact with BT and problem is with there
server. They changed my email settings in Windows Mail.Go to
Tools/accounts/properties.Under Servers tab you need to change pop setting to
pop.mail.yahoo.ca and smtp to smtp.mail.yahoo.ca. Also click on the advanced
tab and change outgoing mail port to 587. This does definitely work. Must be
big problem with their mail server!!

By phone but that would cost a few pence, more if you can't get them
to call you back.

Or online. Tell them the service is not fit for purpose and
they've let you down in a crisis... floods or somesuch
and you want to cancel the account. Demand your
MAC code... http://tinyurl.com/2r4zfo

ps. Get a Gmail id and be done with being in the hands
of any particular ISP.

Is this a temporary fix?

Get a Gmail account for backup email sending.
(it'll accept any "from" email id.)

Any ideas on what to do if you are using a mail hosting company? My BT
account will now send via the Canadian server but my work account which runs
its own smtp still will not work, is this still due to the BT server?

Bt acknowleged temporary outage with BT Yahoo! mail server when using Windows
VISTA. Either contact BT's technical dept or wait for 24 hours while they try
and solve the roblem.
If you call them directly they may reset your SMTP sever remotely as they
successfuly did in my case

I'm not an expert on these things - but do you have a Router or BT Home Hub ?
If so I would have thought your default connection should be set to "Local
Area Network".

Thanks for your "wait for BT to fix" guidance. Alas, I have indeed changed
something on my PC, and WindowsMail/Tools/Properties/Connections is "not
responding" to my efforts to reverse the change, which was:

Thinking that the problem might have been a corrupted programme, I tried to
change the default mode of connection from whatever it was to Broadband. But
now entering the programme defaults the login to a Dial-up instruction that
leads nowhere. What can I do to change the connection instruction so that
Windows Mail will work when BT fixes things?

Thanks,

Thanks to JP & YR the following solved it for me:

go to email TOOLS
click on ACCOUNTS
on every one of your accounts do the following:

Click on one account
click on PROPERTIES on the right hand side

In the new window click on the ADVANCED Tab
In the "Outgoing mail (SMTP): window change the figure 25 to 587
Click on OK

When all accounts have been done., you should have recovered from this silly
problem.

I (and many others) have the same problem in that I can not send emails using
VISTA and BT, but I am fortunate in that I have XP as well and there is no
problem with mail using XP and BT.

Aliro, thanks for your interest. Yes, I do have a BT Voyager Router, and I
now believe that the default was set to Local Area Network. But it no longer
is set that way because of the change I made at
WindowsMail/Tools/Properties/Connection. The software now wants to seek a
dial-up connection and I can't get the Connection tab to perform to allow the
change.

I'm concerned that BT's magic (when it occurs) will not restore the default
Connection, because I suspect that the problem is now in the Microsoft
environment.

All comments welcomed. Thanks.
