Up until a few weeks ago I was always able to search from
the address bar in Internet Explorer 6, but now I receive
a "page cannot be displayed" error message. Instead, I
have to go to a search engine. I have checked all of my
settings and nothing seems to be amiss. I suspect I have a
registry problem, but don't know how to go about
troubleshooting or fixing it. Any clue would be
appreciated.

.Try this,In Internet Explorer,Click Tools/Internet
Options/on the advanced tab,Scroll all the way down
to "When Searching" and see if the "do not search from
address bar is checked.

Today I had this problem and searched for solutions everywhere and tried
everything from Ad-Ware, etc. to changing the registry to reinstalling IE 6;
I literally tried everyone's advice. Nothing helped!!! I'm running Windows
XP and finally tried a System Restore from yesterday's check-point....pretty
scarey for me but I was desperate by this time...and now everything works
fine.

I have also been having the problem with the address bar search giving me the
http:///? Search whatever whatever
error and I finally located a fix that worked for me on another forum. Here it is
Run "Hijack This" and check the box for the following entry if it is found
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file
Close any open browsers and click FIX
Open your browser and try your address bar search function
FINALLY. Post if this also worked for you. Hope I helped
