Cannot run programs

Hoping to get some help...

For some reason, I cannot run Microsoft Office programs or my Norton
Anti-Virus software. I have tried several times to open Word docs with NO
response. I have tried to open Word itself, but all I get is the partial
title screen and the program never opens. At this point, when I attempt to
restart/shut down, the computer is unresponsive.

When I have attempted to run a system scan with Norton, the scan simply
never begins and it hasn't run its scheduled scans since 12/9.

I hope these two problems are related and can be remedied with some simple
advice.

Explorer is fully functional, so what I have now is an expensive Internet
brower.

Hope I can find some advice.

Start Symantec's online virus scan, then find 1 or 2 other online virus
scans and use them.
Check your Event Viewer for any logged errors.

Get, Update and Use Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware SE to check for
malware.
