Cannot reply or forward Lotus Notes based emails

I have Outlook 2003. I cannot reply or forward messages from people who use Lotus Notes. (The system hangs and says something like the smtp server did not respond) If I retype or copy the message into a new Outlook email I can send it to anyone including those who use Lotus Notes for their email.

What could be the problem?
