cannot register jscript.dll

Running XP SP1 (Dell OEM; have CD) updated to SP2 (thus IE 6.xx) through MS

Have tried many of the very clear fixes for my problems listed by experts on
this discussion board after these symptoms: (search assistant disappeared;
IE version and cipher strength information missing; have to use X not okay to
close window;)

Have run scans, including Spybot, Adware and such
Have tried many fixes...including updated scripting 5.6;

HOWEVER:
When I get to any point at which regsvr32 jscript.dll is necessary,

Get message cannot register jscript.dll

And, sometimes, an error with this number: 800004005.

Short of uninstalling SP2, and 'repariing' XP1 and then re-installing SP2,
is there anything else I should be trying?

Here is one possibility for error: 800004005

http://www.msfrontpage.net/fp/p80004005.htm

And here is Papa Microsoft on the subject, they explain
why error 800004005 happens.

Good Luck, x@y.

thank you for responding. I read the htm file (which didn't say much), but I
wonder if you meant to give me a microsoft link as well? It is something I
haven't yet discovered.

Still wondering what I can do about the jscript.dll

Still looking

It appears to reside in a few places. Since I cannot use the *search*
function, I can only locate it by best guess navigating. Thanks for
responding...

1. You might want to refresh your scripting engine:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/nhp/default.asp?contentid=28001169
or
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp
Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en

Sometimes there's a corrupt file in the cache and one must go to Tools |
Internet Options and click Delete Files.

2a. Start>Run>Regsvr32 vbscript.dll

2b. Start>Run>Regsvr32 jscript.dll

(WinXP users who have problems with 2a and 2b, see
http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers_9.htm)

3. Re-register all DLLs listed in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=281679

4. See also

5a. IE Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>Browsing>Enable third-party browser
extensions (uncheck & reboot).

5b. Find the hijacker that caused 5a to be checked (or if none were checked,
check for hijackware anyway):

Is jscript.dll located in C:\Windows\System 32? What version?

More important, however, are the problems which brought you to this point in
the first place. Leave this jscript.dll issue aside and proceed otherwise
to remove your hijacker(s):
