IE Behaving Badly - Pages with redirects, Javascript not working

D

Doug V

I recently (about 3 weeks ago) upgraded my computer from
Windows 98 to Windows XP. After the initial upgrade IE 6
SP1 was working fine.

Today, I finally got around to running Windows Update to
get all of the latest fixes, updates, etc. for WinXP. Now,
IE is not loading certain pages properly. This appears to
be pages with Javascript (or perhaps other types of scripting).

Here are some symptoms:
- When I got to the microsoft.com home page and click the
"Update Your PC Now" banner, the page
windowsupdate.opentext.com tries to open, but is completely
blank.
- When I go to the support search page at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=FH;EN-US;KBHOWTO
, all of the drop-down lists on the search page are blank.
- When I click Help > About Internet Explorer, the Version,
Cipher Strength, and Product ID fields are blank in the
dialog box, and clicking the OK button won't close the box
(although clicking the X in the corner does).

So far, I have tried the following:
- I have run Spybot S & D and fixed any problems.
- Uninstalled Norton AntiVirus (which I cannot now reinstall).
- Downloaded the IE 6 SP1 installer and tried reinstalling,
but it said I already had a newer version.
- Uninstalled the IE patch 832894 (since some on this
newsgroup said it was causing problems).

Note that I am not running any toolbar add-ons or popup
killers, etc.

I'm at a loss as to what to try next. Any help would be
appreciated.

As a follow-up to my issue below, I have unsuccessfully
tried a number of additional steps to correct the problem:
- I tried using the IE Fix tool at the following link:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/IEFIX.htm
- Unfortunately, the above did not work, so I tried to
re-install IE 6 SP1 after changing the registry entry
described at the same link. The reinstall appears to go to
97% complete, at which point it displays an error message
that the install file did not pass the Windows XP logo test
(meaning that the install files do not have the proper
digital signature).
- Also tried enabling "Install on Demand" and set security
to Low on Internet zone. Neither of these helped either.

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Hi Mike,

"windowsupdate.opentext.com" was a typo on my part. I meant
to type "windowsupdate.microsoft.com".

In any event, I went down the path of trying to reinstall
IE 6 SP1 to solve my problem and am now unable to reinstall
due to the error, "The software you are installing has not
passed Windows Logo testing to verify it's compatibility
with Windows XP". I followed the instructions in KB article
828031 and have so far tried the first 3 methods in 822798,
all to no avail. I guess I'll keep plugging away at the
next 5 methods in the article, but I'm not hopeful.
