Have bought a new laptop and changed to windows mail (Vista HP), have set up
email using mhy existing email address. I can send emails ok but cannot
receive. I get no error message and have copied server settings etc from
previous laptop (XP H.E.). I'd be grateful for any help...

So what happens when you try to receive? Does it appear to be
contacting the server? Afterwards is there a status message in the
lower right corner saying "No new messages"?
What happens when you send an email to yourself?

It appears to be connecting to the server and it says "no new messages" in
bottom left corner. When I send a message to myself, it sends ok, falls into
my "sent" folder but doesnt show in the inbox.

Sorry, lower RIGHT corner, not left!

Did you copy all the server settings, including the port numbers?

Did the server settings include the HTTP protocol, which Windows Mail
cannot handle?

A few email providers require special settings for Windows Mail. You
might ask your email provider (who is probably also your internet
provider) for their instructions for setting up to use their email servers.
If they haven't written instructions for Windows Mail yet, their
instructions for Outlook Express will probably also work under
Windows Mail as long as they don't call for the HTTP protocol.
The instructions are probably available somewhere on their web site.
Or, you could tell us who your email provider is and see if anyone
here already knows where to find the instructions.

Also, what if any antivirus programs do you have? Some of them
tend to cause assorted problems in Windows Mail, although seldom
that fast.

Thanks Robert. I copied everything exactly as it was "ports and all"! LOL
Spoke with my ISP too and the settings all check out. He suggested that I
should change my incoming server to match my webhosters' but still has had no
effect. I am running Norton 360, I disabled it to check if that was it, but
the issue is still there....

Hmmm, if the status says "No new messages" it is either checking
the wrong mailbox on the server, or your antivirus is interfering.

As a test, uninstall your antivirus, reboot, then try Windows Mail
again. If no improvement, you can reinstall your antivirus, but I
recommend installing a more compatible antivirus, such as:

AVG free edition: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom
install, and then deselect the email scanning option.

I've uninstalled Norton and sent myself an email and it still saying "no new
messages", no error message and no email either.

Is this a new laptop with you other computer still in service? If so did you
select the option in the e-mail > Accounts > Account name > Properties >
Advanced > check - Leave a copy message on server" ? Then select an aging
option.

Lincoln actually got it right but was way ahead of his time when he said,

I assume you have gone to that mail account via webmail, and
have verified that there are messages waiting to be downloaded.

I am fresh out of ideas, except you could upgrade to Windows
Live Mail, although it is hard to see where that would make a
difference for this particular issue.

"Hi Bob,

The other laptop is no longer in service and I removed the email address in
question from Outlook. I am about to bang my head against a very hard wall!!

....and did you do what Gary asked and check you mail with a WEB access
client to check the status of the files? Are all the e-mails there waiting
to be downloaded? Also are there other accounts on in you e-mail client?

HI GARY,

There are no emails waiting to be downloaded when I check the webmail
program! Which is odd considering ive sent loads to the email address via
itself and other verified, working addresses...

Well !, looks like we need to find out why mail isn't getting to your
account. Did we establish which service you are using, and are you using
the same e-mail address that you set up on your accounts. Is this the same
one you just checked with your web mail? Can you take it from here?

Well, that explains why your Windows Mail isn't downloading any mail.
There's nothing wrong with it. Are there any other computers that are
checking that same mail account, and by doing so, are making the
messages disappear from the server?

I am having the same problem. I can send but not receive. This is the error
I am receiving:
An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'woody', Server:
'pop.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error
Number: 0x80004005. My server is SBC Yahoo. I c alled them last night and
they say everything is correct in my settings, but it still won't work. I
have disab le AVG and also deselected e-mail scanning...in and out both.

See if this leads you to any useful instructions:

http://helpme.att.net/article.php?item=10918

If you used the standard install for AVG, it sometimes helps to uninstall
it and then do a custom install where you tell it to leave out the part
that scans email.

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff

You may also need to remove your email account under Windows
Mail, then restart Windows Mail and add it again.

Also, if you have the Google Toolbar program installed, uninstall it;
it causes problems in Windows Mail.

Your settings are indeed correct, as confirmed by the error message.

AVG can cause problems if it was installed using the default install option.
Uninstall it, then test Windows Mail again to confirm that the problem is gone.
Then reinstall AVG using the custom install option, which allows
you to forego installation of the mail scanning module.
