Both most versions of the McAfee antivirus software and a recent version of
the Trend antivirus software (details not available) cause assorted problems
in Windows Mail, although seldom immediately. So do most versions of the
Norton antivirus software, in case you are thinking of changing again. For
these, just disabling the email scanning or even the whole program is not
enough; you have to uninstall them to stop them from creating new problems.
For the McAfee software, you also need to run this cleanup program, since
its uninstall routine leaves too much behind:

You may also need to remove your email account under Windows Mail,
then restart Windows Mail, then create the account again to finish the
cleanup.

If you can't read .pdf files, you may need to install Adobe Reader so you
can do this:

Don't install the Google Toolbar unless you want more problems in
Windows Mail.
If you want a replacement antivirus program that doesn't cause problems
with Windows Mail, I recommend either avast! or AVG, either one with
a custom install that tells it to leave out the part that scans email.
