Cannot print using network printer

Please help me!

I am a teacher who has been given responsibility for
maintaining a dozen computers (all running Windows 2000)
on a local network.

One of the computers in the network (COMPUTER2) has a
printer attached locally, and this printer is used by all
the other computers in the network. Except for one.

One of the computers cannot "see" the printer when I try
to use the Add Printer Wizard in the Settings/Printers
function found in the Start Menu. It can see COMPUTER2
but not the printer attached to COMPUTER2. This is odd
because ALL of the other computers in the network can see
both COMPUTER2 and the printer attached to it.

This makes it impossible to browse and select this printer
in the Add Printer Wizard.

How can I get COMPUTER8 (the defective one) to see the
printer attached to COMPUTER2? All the computers are
identical in every other respect, as far as I can tell.

Thanks in advance for your time!

When you run Add Printer, do not click Next to browse for the printer.
Instead, enter \\computer2\<sharenameoftheprinter>.

If this is a peer to peer network as opposed to a Win2k domain, you are
likely to continue to experience similar problems because you are exceeding
the 10 connection limit for workgroups.

It probably is you've exceeded the 10 share limit in
your workgroup, but just in case. Rclick on Network
Neighborhood, and select properties on a working
computer. See what protocols you are running. Make
station 8 the same if it is not. I've found that if all are
running tcpip and getting ip addresses from a remote
server, I can load Netbeui to the lame station and
join the group. You have to go to ADVANCED
under the tcpip properties .. to WINS ... and select
resolve NetBios over TCPIP. Another really cheap
solution is to run a serial cable from another computer
to the serial input on the printer, and split your shares
5:5 . I assume your school has stuck you with an
HP3 or something like it. That will work. A more
expensive solution is to network the printer with an
HP JETDIRECT BOX . They are around $100 or
so, and if you can find a used one .. much cheaper.
