One of my PCs has will run any data CD in any CD drive with no problems.
However, if I try to play or burn an audio CD using ANY program, I get a
'Drive is locked and in use' error. Help!

I had the same problem and it is a setting in your Windows Media Player. I am
not sure where to tell you to find it at the moment. But it has to be set to
"Digital" Not "Analog". Hope this helps...If I find it I will post it.

Sorry, I had to look it up... Here's what you do.
Open Windows Media Player.place mouse pointer on the media player name at
the top left hand side "Right click on it"..Then click on "Tools"..Then
"Options" Then "Devices" Then "Doubleclick on "Audio CD" a box will come up
that says "Audio Properties"...Make sure this is set as "Digital" NOT
Analog"...
This should solve your problem..It did mine...
The only other thing one can do is download a "Free" Realplayer".. But I
like Windows Media Player better. Good Luck!

No...the problem go beyond just media player. This pc cannot play audio CDs
in ANY program...WMP, WinAmp, Real/Real1, etc. Also as for burning audio
CDs...it won't do that either..in ANY program, WMP, Magix MP3 Maker, Roxio
EZ-CD Creator (any version), etc.

i have a similar but different prob - ALL cds burnt on my pc will play on a

Your "normal audio kit" does not support the format of the music files you
are putting on the CD. Create data disks (MP3), not music disks, and they
should
play.

I have the same problem.....did you find the solution?

FYI, I called the manufacturer of my PC and the tech support told me that I
have to format my drive and reload "Bill Gate's" OS again. I did not do it
yet 'cause I have too many programs...

Please help

Has anyone found a fix for this as I have exactly the same problem, it seems
to be somthing to do with files that have the .cda extension. However I have
checked the folder options and the cda extension is correctly assigned.

Please help this is driving me mad.

If a PC cannot play a music CD under any circomstances and using any
software then :

Right Click on My Computer > Propoerties > Hardware > Device Manager > is
there a yellow triangle against CVC/CD Drives ? If so, delete the entry and
re-boot, let Xp re-indentify and install the drive. Does it work after that
? (Make sure you use a CD that you know will play on another machine to
check all this).

If not, go buy another player, they're cheap enough.

Cheers,
Jerry
