Cannot place icons in taskbar

I cannot place any icons in my lower taskbar anymore. I
used to be able to drag and drop desktop icons to the
takbar, but now all I get when I drag the icon to the
taskbar is a black circle with a cross in it and the icon I
want to place in the taskbar does not stay there.

sounds like you may have closed the quick launch toolbar

right click on the taskbar and select

toolbars
quick launch

once the quick launch bar is reinstated you should be able to drop icons
in there
