Cannot ping DHCP server, but ipconfig/renew works fine

I am encountering the following problem on my XP SP2 computer.

a) Computer boots up and gets an IP address from my DHCP server (a
linksys router)
b) I can ping my assigned IP address just fine
c) I can execute the command ipconfig/renew just fine
d) but I cannot ping the DHCP server or any other IP address

I can reproduce this behavior consistently. The computer had been
running fine for years, but this problem started happening just a few
days ago.

I reset winsock using the command "netsh winsock reset", but that
didn't improve anything.

Is it possible that the NIC is going bad? How can I verify (or rule
out) a bad NIC? Any other ideas? (If I'm posting in the wrong group,
can you suggest another one?)

Thanks in advance!

Since the computer can get an IP address from the DHCP server, I think
it's unlikely that the NIC is going bad. To find out, you could
install and test this NIC in another computer, or you could install
and test a different NIC in this computer.

What does the error message say when you try to ping the DHCP server?

What does the error message say when you try to ping any other IP
address?

Please include a copy of the TCP/IP route table in your reply. To
write the route table to a file, open a command prompt window (Start >
Run > cmd) and enter this command:

route print >route.txt

Then, copy and paste the contents of the route.txt file into your
reply.
