Cannot Ping by name, only IP address on LAN

Jay Somerset

I have three computers on my LAN (192.168.1.x) connected through an Ethernet
hub. One of them, a Sony Vaio laptop, is "invisible" to the others if
addressed by its name. Only if its explicit IP address is used, can it be
seen and files shared.

All computers on the LAN get their IP addresses via DHCP from the hub. I
can't figure out why this one machine has to be addressed by IP address.
All machines are in the same workgroup -- none are domain machines -- and
all have Netbios over TCP/IP emabled.

What am I doing wrong?

posting the result of ipconfig /all here may help.

Get rid of the Personal Firewalls on the LAN.

I have the same problem as you. Have you fixed it? Would you share the answer with me if you fix it?

No solution, and nobody else seems to know how to solve it either. :-(

I just got the answer from Doug Sherman(MVP):

----------------------
Try:
Edit the registry and change NodeType to b-node or h-node:

Problem finlly solved!

Turned out to be a node-type error. The laptop was configured as a
peer-to-peer type node. This won't work with NetBIOS names!!!

Solution: In the registry, delete the parameter DHCPNodeType (if
peer-to-peer, this would have been set to the value 2). Alternatively,
set/create the parameter NodeType with a value of 1.

See the following MS notice for more info:
