cannot ping address on same segment

Hi

I have one w2k3 server with two nic's.

one nic1 goes to adsl router and the nic2 goes to network switch.

The nic1 that goes to adsl router/firewall has a public ip and the nic2
is internal

This server runs SBS2003 and have 20 XP pro machines on lan

Installed a Sonicwall TZ170 with internal Lan IP.

Every xp client can ping the tz170.

but the server cannot. Even if i plug internal lan nic2 into tz170
it still cannot ping it, but the clients can ping ithe tz170.

The xp clients can also ping nic2 of the server.

Subnet mask, and gateway all the same.

If i change the address of the external nic1 to an internal ip address
and plug it into the lan, this address can ping the tz170, but nic2
cannot, but nic2 can ping the xp clients.

and the xp clients can ping the tz170

very confused ????

any advice help please

First, ping is about worthless as a test. It is fine as an initial test,
but if it fails it means next to nothing. All it really means is that "ping"
failed or was denied,...it proves nothing else.

With SBS, if ISA is on the box ISA can block traffic to the box.

If the ISA is not on the box, then the local Windows Firewall may be
stopping things.

"Installed a Sonicwall TZ170 with internal Lan IP" What is your thinking here?

The sonicwall should be replacing your adsl router. Unless you have a
reason for it you should also be eliminating pcs going thru the server to get
to the internet.

Might want to share with us why you bought the sonicwall.

Thanks for your replies

The firewall is disabled and isa is not on the server.

The strange thing is the other nic1(when ip changed to 192.168.0.200
can ping the sonicwall internal address.

sonicwall is has a internal ip on the lan side and a public ip on the
wan port.

Is this not correct the correct way to config it?

How can the sonicwall replace my adsl router, as this adsl connects
throught the telephone line to connect to the isp and the tz170 does
not have modem.

I want all the pc's to link to the sonicwall and not go through the
server, that is my plan.

any other reasons why a nic2 cannot ping an address on the same range
and nic1 can ping this address.

Cheers
