Cannot open xp pro help, play CDs or play Runescape

Guest

Ever since I installed pro on my child's computer, I have been unable to open
the Help and Support. I've gone to services and there it is installed and
enabled. Now what do I do?
Also there's a problem playing cds and an internet game called Runescape
(yet it runs OK on my XP Home)
Thanks in advance to anyone who can throw some successful solutions my way.

Kate,

What happens when you try to open Help & Support Center? Any error messages?

Ramesh,
Thanks for your reply. No error messages at all - the beast 'thinks'
(flashes timer), pauses, 'thinks' a bit longer (a couple of turns of the
timer) and then nothing!

The other two problems aren't important and could probably be fixed IF I had
H&S!

I eagerly await your solution.

Katie,

Start with DLL registration. Proceed to next method if one fails to resolve
the problem.

Type in Start, Run dialog:

helpctr -regserver
regsvr32 itss
regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx
regsvr32 jscript

Fix Windows XP Help - from Doug's site:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/fix_windows_xp_help.htm

In that does not help, try reinstalling Help and Support Center using this
method:

Click Start, Run and type "%systemroot%\inf". Right-click the file
PCHealth.inf file and choose "Install". Insert your XP CD when prompted. If
you have a Service Pack installed, be sure to point to the
%Windir%\i386\ServicePackFiles folder, or your slipstreamed XP CD (if
available).

BTW, here is the comprehensive rebuild method for Help and Support.

Hi Ramesh,
Thanks again for your assistance. So, let's start at step one. Problem is
(and excuse my ignorance, I'm an 'old' DOSer), but how do I go about this DLL
Reg? I can understand all the other solutions (I think!) but I'd like to try
them in order (yes, I'm a Virgo!)
Looking forward to your next post (and please don't think me too stupid! I'm
just of the past technology era where you could attack the problem from the
base line - I sometime find this new "bells and whistles" method frustrating
and time consuming (now I'll get off my soap box.)

Dearest, Dearest Ramesh,
Thank you so very, very much for your time and patience.
Yes, we have lift off! None of your hints and tips (including 3rd parties)
worked the first, second or third time around.
HOWEVER trying to get into another online programme (which wasn't doing what
it was supposed to do - surprise, surprise!) I had this "female intuition",
acted upon it, and then started everything from scratch (again).
And Eureka!!! It all happened. The Help and Support is WORKING as it should
(I'm using it right now to write this). All I've got to do is fix the other
problems on this beast - but that will (hopefully) a walk in the park
compared to this.
