cannot open folder

Hi, I just recently re-installed windows xp home over an existing windows
because the computer could not boot. When I selected which fix I wanted to
use, it told me that it would fix windows without affecting my personal
folders or data. the thing is that I had a password to access my computer and
when i finished fixing the OS, it replaced "my documents" and also my desktop
icons and folders. The new installation created a new "my documents" with
some numbers after the letters and now the old documents is not accessible.
How can I fix this? is there something I can do to remove the encryption of
the folder? the basic remove the encryption on the folder properties doesn't
work. I need something deeper, probably registry type. I know my password,
this is my computer and just trying to save the most recent pics and docs. I
usually back up my data, but the most recent was not saved at all.

If you encrypted the contents of the folder and its contents without backing
the encryption key before re-installing Windows, then you are out of luck.
