Files Appear Corrupt

Richard

I have Windows XP Pro installed and had problems with a virus. I Hit F11 on
startup on the HP computer (laptop) and repair my windows installation.
Sweet. I started up the new windows and tried to access my previous
documents. ACCESS DENIED. Rebooted computer to safe mode and changed the
access privledges to Full for my NEW account and moved the files I want to
keep to the c:\ directory to access. I rebooted and logged in as normal on
the new installed OS and checked out my files. They all dont work which was
inside My Documents folder. All the other folders in my Account under
documents and settings eg Application Data etc all work its just the My
Documents folder and sub folders are affected by this. I have tried about ten
programs to repair. No such luck. If I go to open a pic of my son, it somes
up preview unavailable and if I use another imaging program same kind of
thing. My mp3s dont work, WMP throws an error, and my vids etc dont work. I
have 12.5 GB of data inside that I could live with only 2 GB of pics of my
new born son or my misses will shoot me. Any Help please??????????

What are your anti-virus and and spyware arrangements? What was the name
of the virus? What did you do to remove the malware infestation?

Hope this helps.

What virus? How did you know you had it?

Is that all you did? You didn't use an anti-virus program?

There is almost no virus that can be removed without using an
anti-virus program. Moreover, if you tried to fix things yourself, you
very likely made the situation worse, not better.

You have data (pictures of your newborn son) that is critical to you,
and you don't have a backup of it on external media? You are playing
with fire.

Run several anti-malware programs first - if you're REALLY lucky
they /may/ fix the problem.

It's time to get a data recovery program and recover what you
can - although it may all be ****ed up beyond hope - to an
external drive or CD/DVD, and then reinstall the whole system.

You might also want to buy a bullet-proof vest.

And take a few remedial English classes. Some of your sentences
are really something, never mind the typos.

First, boot your computer using a free live Linux CD such as Knoppix
<http://knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html>
This will give you a stable operating system to access your files.

Then back up all of your important files using either a USB drive or a
Network drive.

Finally, reinstall Windows on your machine using the procedure from
your manufacturer or your Windows CD.

Be advised that there are some malware/viruses that specifically target
and destroy .jpg files so it is still possible that you will not be
able to recover.

Good Luck,
John

Have you tried PC Inspector Smart Recovery? I recovered a lot of RAW
photos from a re-formatted CF card using it, although it took a long
time. I realise your situation is not the same in that the files may
be corrupted, but the program is free and might be worth a shot.
