Cannot open Display Properties

When opening Display Properties in the control panel, I
get the following error: "an execption occured whily
tring to run 'shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL desk.cpl".
Operating system is WinXP. Can anyone help??

Go to TechNet at microsoft.com,in search type:.dll errors
You should be directed to the on-line dll diagnostic
utility.
