i'm trying to migrate some settings from an old computer running xp. but i
cannot open the documents and settings folder so i can make the changes i
need to.

any suggestions? i'm trying to migrate my opera settings. i do not want to
have to go thru the hassle of customizing opera all over again.

thanks in advance

yep, i've tried this and it will not let me change my access. it continues
to say "access is denied" this is a clean install of vista, on a brand new
computer. i supossedly have administrator privileges.

i've tried creating a "super administrator" and got the same results. i
think that i have a copy of windows 200 hanging around, and an extra copy of
xp, but i really wanted to give vista a try. so far i'm not impressed.

thanks for trying

If its a clean install, how can you have Windows 2000 or XP lingering around?
Also, in vista, there is no Documents and Settings..instead, the folder for
all profiles is located under a folder called Users.

thanks, i'll try putting my files there. this is a brand new computer, first
one that i've bought as a unit and already put together in 10 years.

the windows 2000 and windows xp disks are from old computers that i have
that either have fried hard drives, or otherwise became unusable. when that
happens i usually build another one, using the parts i can recycle and since
i'm replacing a computer, i reuse the os.

while in a previous life i was a computer tech on windows 2000 and 98
machines, i'm finding the learning curve on vist a bit steep. i also have
other os disks sitting around,

thanks for the help. i'll try this out tomorrow.

That's because there is no Documents and Settings folder in Vista. It's
a shortcut only. Notice the arrow? It's all done through the Users
folder now. I went through the same hassles trying to copy my
internet favorites from XP to Vista. There are other do nothing
folders in the Folders pane also identified by the arrow.
