vista business - problem setting file association for opera.exe

after installing opera originally, it had file associations for .mht and
..mhtml files. the association then dissappeared. i tried
re-associating those extensions, but vista would not let me. i tried
doing it in control panel/default programs/associate a file type, and
i also tried using "open with" when right-clicking on the files with
those extemsions. opera is set to my default browser, the .mht and
mhtml files were in the default file types listed for opera (they
dissappeared too). i tried re-installing opera, and upgrading opera.
if i change the program name from opera.exe to, say, opera2.exe,
i can then set the file associations correctly, but of course, i cannot
leave the name changed. can someone help?

thanks.

When you say the associations "disappeared" what do you mean exactly? That
..mht and .mhtml aren't listed anymore? Or they are but not associated
w/Opera? (if they are there, what are they associated with?) Did you
install other software recently that might've assumed default
responsibilities for those two file types?

Do you use Internet Explorer at all? If not, you could try Set Program
Access and Computer Defaults to hide access to IE but it'll apply to all
users of the computer.

the file extensions are still listed in windows explorer and in control
panel. they are just not associated with opera any more. windows explorer
now shows the the file type as "mhtml document" and shows a different icon
for them (not opera or ie). i did not install any other program, and i do not
use ie7 at all, normally. i tried using it to view these mht files after i
could not seem to fix the opera association. that worked for a while, but
then ie7 started screwing up- it would then only show the mht files as text
documents.
ie lists mht and mhtml as default file types. opera did also, but that
disappeared as well. i even just tried completely uninstalling opera and
then re-installing, but that did not restore the defaults opera originally
had. this is really fustating- vista seems to keep changing the way it
works- it never seems to work the same way twice. i thought it was going to
be better than win95, not worse. i keep thinking of downgrading to xp since
that is supposed to be more stable
(so i've been told), but my laptop came with oem vista business, and the
toshiba programs it came with (like the bios and stacks)won't work in xp.

I'm not sure why it's not working for you--something in the registry
might've become corrupted.

One thing to try: create a new user account and see if things work normally.
If things do, then there might be a problem in HKCU, so you could try
logging back into your original account and then go and delete
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.mhtml
The association should then get recreated. Best to create a restore point
beforehand, backup etc before modifying the registry.

i tried creating another user account, and did not have a problem
associating opera.exe with the mht and mhtml file extentions.
i went back into my original account, and the problem still exsisted.
i deleted the parts of the registry you suggested, and that still did
not change or fix anything. i still cannot open those files with opera,
and i can still not associate those or any file extension with opera.exe.

the file type name is still wrong, and so are the icons.

my guess is that i need to uninstall opera, then
delete any mention of opera.exe, opera2.exe, opera3.exe, .mht and .mhtml
from the registry, and then perhaps do something else to the registry so that
it will then let me start associating file types with opera.exe again (but i
have no idea of how to do that.), then reinstall opera.

I'm sorry you're having such a hassle with this--if you do manage to resolve
the issue, please let the rest of the newsgroup know how, thanks.
