I have run my antivirus software (found 32 viruses)and have rebooted the
machine. I get to the users page at startup (there are 2 users) and try to
insert my password. XP Home tries to start the desktop and then logs off
again in about 30 seconds

Any suggestions on how to access the desktop and NOT lose any data as I
forgot to do a backup

Thanks

So does it do "loading your personal settings..." and then "saving your
personal settings..." and not log you in? If it is, you're kinda out of
luck. I had this problem twice now and after asking about a hundred people
or so, nobody knew what to do. My only solution was to do a repair install
of WinXP and then boot the computer. Just be warned that you only get one
chance at this. If you restart your computer, it will not let you login
again and you'll have to do a repair install. So bootup, copy your files to
another harddrive or computer, format the drive, reinstall WinXP. You can
see one of my posts here about this issue that might explain the process a
bit better:

Best of luck.
