Chris

when installing XP on my new machine(after finally
getting it *to* install) i opted not to create any user
accounts. it assigned the default account of
administrator, and when i go to log on, it asks for a
password. if i type anything it says that i have
enterred an incorrect password, and if i just hit enter
it says "specified domain either does not exist or cannot
be found"

why can't i get into windows?

Chris, I am not sure of the fundamental problem that is causing you to
be locked out, but may people in this group have recommended the above
site. If it works, the "why" becomes less important.
Good luck.

I think the clue lies in "specified domain". It sounds like you're
trying to log into a domain rather than locally. Be sure you're logging
onto the local workstation. Post back if you need more help.
