Can't log onto Windows XP Home!

My Windows XP Home edition computer was working fine last night when I turned
it off. This morning, I cannot use any of the user accounts to log on to
windows.

1. I enter the correct password at the XP home welcome screen.
2. Windows appears to be trying to start
3. The screen flashes.
4. The log off screen appears and says it is saving my settings.
5. The welcome screen reappears.

I can't get to the desktop. I try to use safe mode, but the same thing
happens under the administrator. I can log into recovery console as
administrator, but I don't know what to do at the command prompt to fix the
problem.
