cannot log on to windows in remote desktop connection (rdc)

have laptop with xp home, desktop w xp prof, and a Network Everywhere router
(model nr041-wm) installed.
(on the laptop) I open rdc and get a dialog bx with 5 tabs. In the box for
computer
i type the i p add of my desktop. My own name appears in the user name box.
I type in a pw in the password box and use ms home for the domain. When i
click connect, i get the em: "the system could not log you on. make sure your
user name
and domain are correct..."
Some observations: the issue seems to be password related on the laptop and
not on the desktop. When i try to connect to the laptop, from the desktop, i
get a different em. I get a large em box labeled "remote desktop
disconnected" with an em saying "the client could not connect to the remote
computer. remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be
too busy to accept...."
Several wks ago i was attempting to network these 2 computers without a
router (my ignorance). In setting up the connection on the laptop, i
apparently used a pw that i no longer remember. maybe this is why i can't log
on to windows ? ? I am the system admn of both computers-- surely, there's a
way to go in an undo this mess and start over with a new connection.
ANY help would be appreciated.

First off, you won't be able to use Remote Desktop to connect
from your desktop to the laptop. A computer running XP Home
Edition cannot act as the host computer, it can only be a
client. Translation, you can only connect "from" XP Home "to"
XP Pro.

Next, don't make an entry in the Domain line.

If you're still unable to make a connection from the laptop, go
back to the desktop and reset your password. It's possible that
the password you're using is incorrect.

Good luck

thanks for the speedy reply, Nepatsfan. when you said go back and change the
pw on the laptop, did you mean open the rdc and change it on the dialog bx
that appears after you hit "options", or did you mean to go through user
accounts. I never set up a pw in user accounts.

i have several times tried to change the pw, but keep getting the em: "the
system could not log you in. make sure your user name and domain are
correct...etc"
could it be a bad user name. is there a way i can just start fresh and
reset the user name and pw. perhaps i'm not doing it right. could you give me
a step by step (very specific) on how to do this.
tks

OK, let's set up the correct scenario:

Connection from the desktop (XP Pro) from the laptop (XP Home)
using Remote Desktop.

1. On the desktop, you need at least one user account that has
a password. You'll use this account's name and password to
connect from your laptop.
Note: When I suggested resetting your password, I was referring
to the one associated with your desktop account. That way you
know you're entering the correct information in the RDC dialog
box.

2. Make sure that any firewall programs you've installed on the
desktop, including the built-in Windows firewall, have been
configured to allow access through a Remote Desktop connection.
In the Windows Firewall, it's a simple process of checking
Remote Desktop on the Exceptions page. If you're using a third
party firewall, you'll need to open TCP port 3389.

3. Back at the laptop, launch Remote Desktop connection.
Enter the private IP for the desktop, this should be something
like 192.168.x.x.
Note: If you're not sure what info to enter go to Start ->
Run -> cmd.exe on the desktop. Enter ipconfig /all at the
command prompt to obtain the correct IP address for your
desktop computer.
Enter the user name and password that you've set up on the
desktop computer.
Hit the Connect button.

Hopefully, the connection will be made. Post back if it doesn't
work.
