Cannot Link to ODBC Database

Help!! I am using Access 2003 and Windows Vista. When I try to link to an
ODBC database the dialog box to select the database type never comes up. My
process is:

File --> Get External Data -->Link Tables: ODBC Databases.

The next window that should launch does not launch....

This is your antiviruses (AV) at work. Deactivate the Office or Script
Plugin (temporarily) or whatever else it's called in your AV or deactivate
the full AV. You can reactivate it later when the connection has been
established.

I turned off Norton. It still is not working. What else can I try?

You have turned off Norton and the dialog window still doesn't show up? I'm
very surprised by that. Mabye you didn't check off the right option. With
NAV 2006, you must do the following:

Settings->Virus and Spyware Protection Options->Miscellaneous -> 'Turn on
scanning for Microsoft Office Documents' must be unchecked.

or check the check the following article:

For other versions of NAV (2003, 2007); I don't know for sure. For some
older editions, it was called the Office Plugin or the ActiveScript plugin
or something like that, I don't remember exactly. Maybe you have another
antivirus on your system, too?

However, I can tell with 99% of certainty that your problem is caused by an
antivirus. If your problem is really not caused by an antivirus, then you
should post again but this time, adding the explanation that you have
already checked the antivirus. (Otherwise, someone else will chimne in and
tell you again that it's caused by your antivirus.)

I am also using Access 2003 and Vista and had the same problem.
This is what I did.

- Open "Norton Protection Center"
- Select "Norton Internet Security" TAB
- In the "Settings" section, select "Spyware Protection", and click
"Configure"
- Under "Advanced options", select "Miscellaneous"
- Un-check "Turn on scnning for Microsoft Office documents"
- Then close all Norton windows

After this, the ODBC dialog came back when linking in MsAccess.

I hope that works for you.
