cannot ipconfig renew after moving to diff. network

I am connected to one network (ip connectivity - no domain
logon) then physically move my Win2K laptop to another
network (from business LAN to hotel LAN), but I cannot re-
establish network connectivity without rebooting. I have
tried ipconfig /renew, but it just hangs with no
response. I have also tried disabling and enabling the
local area connection. In the past, these measures
sufficed. I do put my laptop in stand-by when moving, if
that is significant.

You may want to try ipconfig /release before you unplug from the first
network. That should allow you to grab a new DHCP. I am thinking that when
you are trying to renew, your machine is requesting an invalid IP from the
hotel DHCP server. By releasing ahead of time, you should be asking for any
available IP instead of your last IP...

I will try to /release before disconnectiong as
instructed, but this had already occurred to me. After
already on the new network and trying to /renew, I tried
a /release but the return msg was that the adapter was
already released. I also noticed that in the Local Area
Connections details, only 1 packet had been sent and 0
received (despite multiple /renew commands which all
hang), so there does appear to be any successful
communication with a DHCP server.
