Resetting network connection - IPCONFIG hangs

Gary

When moving my Dell laptop (running Win2k server, not as a PDC) between my
home, office and on the road, I frequently cannot get TCP/IP activated again
in the new location. I keep my TCP/IP settings simple. I "obtain" all
settings from the server and never specify a Default Gateway. I don't use
NetBEUI. I try to rely only on TCP/IP. I never log into a network other than
my own (as the laptop itself is a server).

In most cases when I suspend my laptop and restore from RAM, things work
great. But there are times that Windows gets confused about how to connect
to the network. The subnet might be the same or different. The gateway might
be at a different IP address, but I simply won't be able to connect to the
new network.

- I don't know what it's "doing" or "thinking", but IPCONFIG hangs when
trying to do a /release or /renew.
- I can't ping anything.
- I've tried stopping\restarting the "DHCP Client" service, but this hangs
too and goes into a "Stopping" state.
- Disabling and then enabling the network connection does not help either.
- I've tried using ARP to try and "tell" it where the gateway is, but this
doesn't really work.

The only remedy is to restart the computer. It's my opinion that this should
not be necessary for an operating system as mature as Windows. Does anyone
know how to essentially reset the network system in windows AS IF I
restarted the computer? Any idea why IPCONFIG hangs or how to reset it so
that it will search for the current gateway?

Thanks!
Gary
