Cannot install Service Pack 2

I get almost all the way through and then suddenly "Access denied". I
contacted Microsoft and they said maybe I needed to do it from the disk
instead of online, so they sent me one. But still get the same problem, and
it seems without SP2 I cannot get an Installer to take hold so cannot install
any other programs either.

The problem is that I have removed and reinstalled the Installers over and
over. I have tried 3.0 and 3.1. They finish, and I get a message that the
program is installed but when I try to do something I still get an error. It
says that I am either in safe mode (not) or the installation is incomplete.
Could it be that these things will not work until SP2 is in???
How about an easy one....this version of XP was an upgrade to ME. I have
reinstalled and repaired but don't want to format because I don't want to
lose stuff. One of the things I am trying to install that Installer won't let
me is a program to transfer files to my new computer. So is there a way to
REMOVE the XP upgrade and go back to ME??? I never had problems until
XP.....and my 3rd computer running ME never has a problem.

If you haven't removed any of the backup files the upgrade left you
with, then you can (I just did it for a friend). You'll find the option
to remove XP in "Add or Remove Programs".
