Cannot install fax services

Willem II

Hello,

I tried to install fax services (add/remove windows components), but got
errors.

During the setup-process I get the message "file fxscfgwz.dll is needed, on
the WindowsXP-cdrom". When I point to the file mentioned (in my
C:\i386-folder or on the cd) this file is not recognized - at any case the
same message stays appearing ("file fxscfgwz.dll is needed").
In the end in safe modus I removed all fxs*.*-files from the folders
C:\windows\system32
and C:\windows\system32\dllcache. But when trying to install the faxservice
the errors changes: "Setup cannot copy fxscfgwz.dll" or "... fxsclntR.dll"
or other dll's.
In the mean time all 24 fxs*.*-files returned to C:\windows\system32, so are
reinstalled.

On http://support.microsoft.com/?id=884018 I saw, these errors maybe due to
a corrupt security-database. And indeed, the logfile
C:\windows\security\scecomp.log shows more than 20 errors like:

"05/20/2007 14:47:57 Error=2 Update File
C:\WINDOWS\system32\fxscfgwz.dll
Security=D:p(A;;GRGX;;;BU)(A;;GRGX;;;PU)(A;;GA;;;BA)(A;;GA;;;SY)(A;;GRGX;;;WD)".I tried to repair this database by "esentutl /p%windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb"(found this command inhttp://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.print_fax/browse_thread/thread/9d394c83dc837b10/e03a499627a5c7f6?lnk=st&q=Win32+Cabinet+Self-Extractor&rnum=20), but these "error=2 Update File"-errors stay coming. What can I do to install the faxservices ?Thanks, Willem

When the installation routine is unable to find the necessary installation
files (even when directed to the appropriate i386 Folder) it usually means
that the installation files are compressed. This is often the case when the
files are pre-copied by a manufacturer on the hard drive. If you do a search
for the files that the installation routine claims are missing (fxsapi.dll
and fxcfgwz.dll) you won't find them, but you will find fxsapi.dl_ and
fxcfgwz.dl_. These are compressed DLL files and will need to be
decompressed. Double click on them and you will get a prompt for the file to
use to open them. Click on BROWSE. and select Win32 Cabinet Self-Extractor,
which is in the system folder. With any luck it will uncompress them all and
make them visible as DLL files. The install routine still may not find these
files. If so, then you must manually direct the installation routine to the
i386 folder that contains these extracted files.

Dear "Byte",

Thanks for your reply.
Alas, the fxs*.dll-files are allready decompressed.

Now, when I try to install the faxservices, the wizard continues normally.
But at the end the Fax service (in Windows Components) stays déselected :-(

This is the normal starting place and Byte already gave it to you:

http://members.shaw.ca/bsanders/FAQFAX.htm#_Toc88835132
2. Why can't the XP Fax Installation Program find the Installation Files?

In this case, it found everything, but didn't install it correctly. Its
likely you have security data base corruption as documented here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/
You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP

You can either:

1. Get the hotfix mentioned in the KB article and install it. Microsoft
usually waives any charges for support calls to get supported hotfixes
listed in Knowledge Base articles.

2. Try this procedure using the Esentutl.exe utility mentioned in the KB
article to recover from security database corruption:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00270202
HP and Compaq Notebook PCs: Unable to Install Windows XP Fax Software

I can report that the Esentutl utility has corrected the problem in a number
of cases, HOWEVER, note that Microsoft does NOT recommend that you use the
utility and would prefer you try the hotfix.
