cannot get Windows to Boot from my hard drive

I am attempting to load a brand new installation of
Windows XP Pro, but after the initial intallation, my
system will not boot from the hard drive and take me
through the rest of the installation. Any ideas as to
what the problem might be? I have tried various hard
drives and still get the same problem.

How old is the pc,
how big is that harddrive,
what specific error message is there,
or does it just hang?

If it's happening to more than one hard drive, check your
BIOS settings carefully. Incidentally, how large are
these hard drives? Is the BIOS recognizing them
properly? How many watts is your power supply? There may
not be enough power for the hard drive.

What do you mean by 'take me through the rest of the installation'? I.e.,
what is actually going on? At first blush, you would want XP to go through
the rest of the installation.

It only allows the initial setup in the dos screens. When
setup has the system machine reboot, I do not get Graphic
User Interface that allows for the rest of setup to
cotinue. Instead I am forced into once again booting from
the CD.

On reboot after the copying of setup files, does the system stop at the
"press a key to boot CD" and hang at that point? If a key is not pressed,
setup should bypass the booting from CD and proceed with the setup.
If it hangs, when the system reboots, at the beginning of the post up
messages, press Pause/Break and remove the CD. then press Pause/Break again,
sometimes this will allow setup to finish.
If that doesn't work, remove everything except the video, keyboard and
mouse. If setup completes, do not activate until you restore all the
hardware to the system, and restore the hardware components one at a time.
