Cannot get rid of AVI file

A

Alan

Having a strange problem.
there is an .avi file, which I cannot get rid of off the laptop running XP
home (with all updates)
I have tried even starting in safe mode (both in administrator and the only
profile on the computer) to remove it, but every time I try I get the error
"Cannot delete, this file is in use by someone else or another programme.
please exit the programme and try again"

I have even been into the registry to remove any reference to the file
(after trying safe mode etc..) and it still wont let me delete. I have tried
opening up the properties and it will not open and makes the lappy slow down
quite considerably.

I am using Norton AV 2004 again fully updated and no viruses on the computer

Anyone any thoughts?

Hello Alan,

I know nothing about Norton AV, maybe you should try to temporary disable it
(and other anti-virus software too)?
Another solution can be to run Sysinternals' Process Explorer (get from
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml ) and search for a
handle with you AVI file name (menu Find / Find Handle). If it found it
shows the application that has opened that file.

Hope this helps.

try doing this: press ctrl-alt-delete then select the tab "processes" then close down all the processes that are shown as running under your username. Don't Close any of the system ones [you prob cant anyways]

hope that helped

In the event that you can't see the AVI file. Check the attributes by
typing ATTRIB *.* maybe the
culprit file is a <read only> file.

This problem seems to only affect avi's for some reason. Move all other
files that are in the folder with the avi to a temp folder, except the avi.
TheN click the start button, then click run, then type in the window "cmd",
without the """" quotation marks. U are looking at the base operating
program, dos. It should say something like "c:\documents and settings\your
name". type "cd.." ( make sure you put the 2 dots), then enter. Keep doing
that until u see "c:\>" now type " cd folder name". for instance, if the
folder name that the undeletable avi is in is called "movies", u should
type "cd movies" now type "del *.*" the *** button is the 8 on your
keyboard. It will now say "are you sure, y/n" hit y then enter. Your file
is gone. Close the black window and move all the files u moved out of the
folder back into it and ur done.

Do a google search on "corrupt AVI", "unable to copy AVI", etc. I am
sorry that I cannot find the reference right now. XP wants to load the
entire AVI file when it is selected and if it is corrupt at all, cannot
be deleted. There is a registry hack that disables this behavior,
making a delete possible. kelly's corner might have the registry key to
do this.
