Cannot get OE6 to connect

J

Jeff

I need help badly. I have XP Home SP-2 on 2 laptops. In both cases I
connect to the same ISP with the same accounts, etc. Both laptops used to
work fine, but now something has gone wrong with OE on one of them and I do
not know what to do to fix it. I think the problems started when I imported
messages from the one I use most to laptop 2. I also copied the newsgroups
dbx files and the folder dbx from 1 to 2.

Now when I try to send or receive mail with the OE on laptop 2 I get the
following error:

"An unknown error has occurred. Account '....'
Server: mail......... (it's correct)
Protocol: SMTP
Server response '421 cannot connect to SMTP server ............ connectivity
error 10061'
Port 25
Secure(SSL): No
Error Number: 421
Code: 0x800ccc67

This is a dialup system and the dialer works fine and I can surf the web
fine on laptop 2. The settings in OE6 are identical in both laptops. I
even re-entered them after deleting them, rebooting and re-entering them.
Maybe an identity problem? I do not know.

I am willing to restart from scratch with OE on the problem laptop if I knew
how to go back to a virgin OE. So:
1. How do I go back to a virgin unused OE6
2. Is importing accounts and messages from the working laptop OK?
3. How to import newsgroups?

Is there a simpler way to duplicate the OE 6 from one laptop to the other?
I have complete backups with TrueImage 7 from which I can restore if that is
what it needs.

Thanks for any help. Very frustrating.

For some reason, OE "cannot connect to [the] SMTP server". If you're
*certain* the SMTP servername is correctly entered and the problem exists on
only one machine using the same connection:

1. Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<paste>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
</paste>

2. Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity
(File>Identities>Add new identity). Assuming all is well, import messages
from the old Identity before deleting it (File>Identities>Manage
Identities).

To avoid such corruption in future:

Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Thank you SO much! That solved my problems.

I deleted the bad main identity. Now I would like to import and make
available the messages and message folders I have in the same version of OE6
on another PC. When I ask the new OE6 to import from a store folder (a CD
drive where I have all the dbx folders and messages) it tells me it can find
nothing to import from there. How do I transfer all my messages and folders
from one OE6 to the other?

Can it do that for the newsgroups too?

Thanks.
