cannot find the local profile

I have windows xp home. I have recently had a new power jack installe
on the laptop, and i think the fan is now on the way out. After ne
jack installed I turned on laptop, and had the following message afte
the log in screen...
'windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with
temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost whe
you log off'

It then loads a profile, I can open some programs, no documents, o
search my drive.
I tried to log off and log into other user accounts on the system bu
they have just the same message.
Does anyone have any idea what this means and is it fixable??

Thank you Mark, I now need to get the fan fixed before i try to do
anything else on the laptop, then will hopefully get the profile
problem sorted via your link.
