Hi first time user to this site so please be kind! I have just tried to load
a CD and it no longer continues to auto run or open. It now appears to have
totally disappeared from my laptop. Only c;drive and f:drive now available. I
have Windows XP and even tried a dvd and watch it on windvd (icon still
there) but to no joy. Have i totally deleted this somehow? if so how can i
retrieve it. If anyone can provide some idiot proof answers id really
appreciate it. Many thanks Paul : )

Have you tried a reboot? What shows in device manager for the CD drive? Is
it detected in the BIOS?

Certainly does sound like it is dead. Replacement is most likely the only
cure.

What was the resolution? This is one reason why one should not multipost,
sending separate messages on the same issue to different newsgroups. Users
in one group don't see the outcome in the other. Next time crosspost,
sending one message to all groups at the same time. Do this judiciously.
In most cases there is no need to post to more than one group.

So can you tell us what fixed it?

ROCK PLEASE FIND BELOW THE LINK I USED TO RESOLVE MY ISSUE.
As previously stated FIRST TIME user to this site i first sent a request for
help in this general forum then realised there was a Help and Support forum
so i tried my luck in there as i had no response by the time u sent your
response. Thanks for your help but i had already tried the link below which
helped. If there is a next time i wont multipost and be more patient.

Link sent to help: Go here www.dougknox.com WinXP Fixes rt column 11 down

Jonah, no problem and thanks for the update, it will help others.

As background, the Help and Support group was actually intended for issues
with the Help and Support function, not for general help on XP. That's what
windowsxp.general is for. But because of it's name folks started using it
for general questions, and now the two are redundant. MS should really get
rid of the Help and Support newsgroup. For XP questions this should be the
group to use.

Normally one only needs to post to a single, most applicable newsgroup. But
at times it can be necessary to post to more than one newsgroup with an
issue. In that case the way to do is is with crossposting, sending one
message to all groups at the same time. That way replies in any of the
newsgroups are seen in all the newsgroups. The web interface does not allow
that. That is one of many reasons why it's awful.

I recommend, if you plan on using these newsgroups much, is to use a
newsreader to access what are actually Usenet newsgroups. The experience is
much better and you can easily crosspost if needed. XP comes with Outlook
Express which can be set up for newsgroup access. Here is a link with info
on how to do that.

Have fun.
