"Cannot find C:\Windows\System32
\System32.exe" warning message when you start Windows XP

Microsoft suggests that it left over from a worm virus
and to edit the registry (Microsoft Knowledge Base
Article), HOWEVER IT DOESN'T BOOT, TO LET ME CLICK THE
START BUTTON (AND PROCEED)!
Machine says to put OEM disk in and 'R' for repair...
only wants to retore whole deal. I would like to fix
this problem with corrupted file rather than loose
everything from a complete restore (compaq system).

I was using this software that restores deleted/lost files
......I was using it on my digital camera stick and by
mistake one time c: was chosen and it didn't look like
anything was happening wouldn't stop or quit so I pushed
power button = No Patience, next time I wait!

Please help

Don't use the first Repair option. Boot from the OEM Windows XP CD, and do
a Repair Install, which fixes Windows XP, but leaves your programs and data
files alone. For a step by step on how to do Repair Install, along with
screen shots, go to:

http://www.web.ca/windowsxp/repair_xp.htm

When the page opens, scroll down and click on: How To Run A Repair
Install. There is a step by step walk through including images. Your
software, settings, data files, desktop, etc. are retained.

Windows XP Repair Installs have save me a few times...

Greetings --

I'd strongly suggest that you invest in and install a good
anti-virus program.
System32.exe is _not_ a valid Windows file, but rather a file name
commonly used for a component of several well-known viruses, worms,
and Trojans.

could help:
