cannot enter safe mode

After F8 > then scrolling up to Safe Mode > selecting: it appears to be
entering safe mode in that the screen shows drivers being loaded. It pauses
at the question as to whether to not load a driver as per usual. It then
hangs with the HDD seek light flashing rapidly. then it reboots normally
without ever entering safe mode. How can I straighten this out. this has been
happening ever since that hardware update last week which loaded a driver for
apoint but I do not know if it is related.

Can you get in using Last Known Good Configuration? If so, once in, use
System Restore to go back to before you did the hardware update.

Carl,

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, this is a result of the VIA crap
last week from Windows Hardware upgrade in which reboot protection would not
allow normal boot. I used last known at that time. When I then found issues
with msconfig issuing a denial warning, I ran BitDefender which could not
clear a trojan until I turned off SR.

I ahve since been able to enter Safe Mode but only after several loops back
through reboot > F8 > reboot > F8 until it finally allows entry.
