cannot enable welcome screen / fash switching screens

Maz

When I try to switch to the Welcome screen under User
Accounts, I get:

"A recent installed program has disabled the Welcome
screen and Fast User Switching. To restore these
features, you must uninstall the program. The following
file name might help you identify the program that made
the change: CSGina.dll"

Looking at "CSGina.dll", I can see it carries a date that
is before the date I purchased my PC (with Windows XP
home edition preinstalled). So I can't believe it's a
recent install that's caused it.

I am not running any strange programs (as far as I
think), and I have not installed that many programs
altogether.

Also, I know that when I first had my PC, the welcome
screen was working (that was the default setting).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Specifically, I
would prefer a solution that does not involve un-
installing any programs.

Thanks,

Have you ever been able to use the Welcome screen? The program you mention
sounds like a custom logon screen. Does your logon screen have a company
name other than Microsoft on it? That program is what is blocking the
Welcome screen. Your vendor must have installed that before you purchased
the computer.

You would need to remove the custom logon screen to be able to use the
Welcome screen. The custom version may show up under Add/Remove Programs. If
it does not, ask your vendor for help in removing it.

Scroll down to the Fast User Switching FAQ item here
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/471/vpn_3000_faq.shtml

While you may find a work around on the 'net for re-enabling Fast User
Switching after Cisco's VPN client has been installed, this is a REALLY BAD
IDEA.

Fast User Switching is designed for the convenience of home users of a shared
PC. Fast User Switching is definitely NOT designed as a secure sandbox for
toggling between using the VPN at work while trading files or chatting via
ICQ. Malicious code encountered by one fast switched user can and will tunnel
right down the VPN into the corporate network via the fast switched user
logged onto the VPN.

That's why Microsoft disables Fast User Switching when a machine is joined to
a domain or another GINA is installed.
